Serving Fundamentals

Introduction
Welcome to the Serving Course

Serving Is the First Attack

Serving is much more than simply putting the ball into play. It is the first attack of every rally and one of the most important skills in modern volleyball.

Unlike every other volleyball skill, the serve begins with complete control of the ball. There is no blocker, no setter, and no opponent touching the ball before you. Every serve is an opportunity to score directly, force a poor reception, or immediately put the opposing team under pressure.

A strong serve can change the entire rally. It can score an ace, disrupt the opponent's offensive system, create an easier defensive situation, and build confidence in important moments of the match.

Types of Volleyball Serves

Three Techniques. Three Different Weapons.

1Float Serve

The float serve is one of the most consistent and accurate serving techniques. Because the ball has little or no spin, it can move unpredictably through the air, making reception more difficult.

2Jump Float Serve

The jump float serve combines the unpredictable flight of a float serve with additional speed and a higher contact point. It creates more pressure while preserving accuracy and control.

3Jump Topspin Serve

The jump topspin serve is the fastest and most aggressive serving technique. Strong topspin allows the ball to travel at high speed and still drop sharply into the court.

100+ km/h Powerful jump serves at elite levels can exceed this speed.
≈ 120 km/h Exceptional serves can reach speeds near 75 mph.
